Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging:
from Morphology to Function

Coronary heart disease and stroke, along with other diseases of the circulatory system, remain as the leading cause of death in the Western world. In developing countries, ischaemic heart disease is rapidly rising due to changes in diet, lifestyle and smoking. For the management of cardiovascular disease, Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) imaging is emerging as an important clinical tool because of its safety, versatility, and the high quality images it produces that allow accurate and reproducible quantification of cardiac structure, function, and blood flow. The future of CMR is directed towards more targeted imaging and functional mapping, driven by the parallel development of molecular imaging, targeted therapy, and stimulated by the initial experience of functional and molecular MR imaging of angiogenesis. The purpose of this talk is to outline some of the major developments in CMR and presents our latest results in rapid and adaptive imaging for enhancing the ultimate spatio-temporal resolution of CMR for delineating small structural details and capturing transient haemodynamic changes; integrated/targeted multi-spectral imaging in linking function with morphology and tissue composition for targeted assessment of cardiovascular structure and function; and cardiovascular modelling towards patient specific bio-mechanical and haemodynamic modelling for prognostic evaluation of therapeutic measures. The talk will also cover different CMR imaging modalities including myocardial perfusion, diffusion, strain and strain-rate imaging, structure adaptive and locally focussed imaging, as well as MR guided and robotically assisted endovascular intervention.

Biographical Sketch

Professor Guang-Zhong Yang Ph.D. in Computer Science from Imperial College London, UK and is director and co-founder of the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, Deputy Chairman of the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London, UK. Professor Yang also holds a number of key academic positions at Imperial - he is Director and Founder of the Royal Society/Wolfson Medical Image Computing Laboratory, co-founder of the Wolfson Surgical Technology Laboratory, Chairman of the Centre for Pervasive Sensing. Professor Yang's main research interests are in medical imaging, sensing and robotics. In imaging, he is credited for a number of novel MR phase contrast velocity imaging and computational modeling techniques that have transformed in vivo blood flow quantification and visualization. These include the development of locally focused imaging combined with real-time navigator echoes for resolving respiratory motion for high-resolution coronary-angiography, as well as MR dynamic flow pressure mapping for which he received the ISMRM I. I Rabi Award. He pioneered the concept of perceptual docking for robotic control, which represents a paradigm shift of learning and knowledge acquisition of motor and perceptual/cognitive behavior for robotics, as well as the field of Body Sensor Network (BSN) for providing personalized wireless monitoring platforms that are pervasive, intelligent, and context-aware. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and fellow of IEEE, IET, AIMBE and received the Royal Society Research Merit Award.
